Teen Mental Health Retreats
At the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga (BGCSHC), supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of teens has become an essential part of our mission. As national awareness grows around the mental health challenges facing young people, our organization has responded by evolving how—and where—we show up for teens who need support the most.
Across the country, rates of anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders among youth have risen dramatically. Recent U.S. data shows that anxiety and depression in young people have more than doubled in recent years. In 2023 alone, 40% of U.S. high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and 1 in 5 seriously considered suicide. These statistics are alarming—and they reflect what we see locally in our own communities.
Recognizing this urgent need, BGCSHC launched Teen Mental Health Retreats in 2018 as a proactive, restorative response for teens experiencing stress, anxiety, isolation, and emotional overwhelm. These retreats provide a safe, supportive environment away from daily pressures, where teens can build coping skills, reconnect with themselves, and develop healthier ways to manage stress and emotions.
“Our goal was to meet teens where they are and respond to what they’re experiencing right now,” says Executive Director Trent Yaconelli. “With the support we’ve received, we were able to try something different—something intentional, healing, and impactful.”
Held in Oregon twice yearly, the retreats combine therapeutic programming, outdoor experiences, and guided reflection led by trained professionals and caring mentors. The results have been powerful, with participants reporting meaningful improvements in emotional regulation, confidence, and overall mental well-being.
These programs are made possible through the generosity of Major Gifts donors, BIG Night Gala supporters, and national partnerships through Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Their investment allows BGCSHC to innovate, respond to real needs, and provide life-changing experiences for teens at a critical moment in their lives.
At BGCSHC, we believe mental health support is not optional—it’s foundational. Our Teen Mental Health Retreats are one way we are helping young people feel seen, supported, and equipped to move forward with resilience and hope.
